Hummingbird feeder parts | ¿I can put red food coloring in hummingbird food?

Posted By: junmar

I just got a feeder, and can make my own food to put on it. If I do four parts water and one part sugar (I found this site: http://www.wbu.com/education/hummingbirds.html) will hurt the bird if I put the dye red food there?

Red food coloring is used because it can attract hummingbirds (such as bright-colored flowers). There is no evidence that food dyes harm hummers, but if you want to be sure why not make the charger red, rather than putting in the sugar solution? This has been shown to work as well.

Hummingbirds develop different colors depending on what they eat …. red in the food, the redder of the bird, usually in the neck. However, you must take the feeder in the fall, or they lose their journey southward migration (yes, migration, “a journey” the greatest of birds like Canada geese) would otherwise be for the Food and freezing to death.
